劇情簡介
故事發生在十九世紀的紐約。奧斯汀醫生（阿爾伯特·芬尼 Albert Finney 飾）事業有成，在華盛頓廣場有著自己的房產，在當時，這就是人生成功的標誌。身為奧斯汀的女兒，凱瑟琳（詹妮弗·傑森·李 Jennifer Jason Leigh 飾）對成功的父親充滿了崇拜，但是，對於女兒的平凡，奧斯汀感到十分的不滿。 一位名叫莫裏斯（本·卓別林 Ben Chaplin 飾）的青年男子出現在了凱瑟琳的身邊，對這個單純的女孩發動了熱烈的攻勢，不敵莫裏斯的熱情，凱瑟琳很快就淪陷了，彭尼曼夫人（瑪吉·史密斯 Maggie Smith 飾）亦對這個儀表堂堂的男子感到十分滿意。心中略感不安的只有奧斯汀一個人，因為他知道自己的女兒會在將來繼承自己價值不菲的財產，這讓他對莫裏斯接近凱瑟琳的初衷產生了懷疑。
