劇情簡介
冬日的夜裏，律師米歇爾（伊安·霍姆 Ian Holm 飾）在某洗車房洗車時，接到了嗑藥女兒佐伊打來的電話，言語間曝露了父女之間理念上的矛盾。懷著一腔悶氣的米歇爾，又遭遇了洗車時車門打不開的尷尬，最後只能憤然棄車，揚長而去。此前，在飛機上，米歇爾曾邂逅女兒的昔日好友艾莉森，並跟他講述了父女分崩離析的原因······米歇爾在小鎮上目睹了一起車禍現場，那個載有學齡兒童的校車因躲避來車意外翻車掉進了湖裏，導致很多家庭失去了親生骨肉。米歇爾在探訪中接觸到了各式各樣的家庭，有的父女畸形戀，有的酗酒暴力，有的疾病纏身。為了幫助他們向政府討要撫恤金，律師走上了一條坎坷的助人為樂之路······
